A pastime is an activity that someone does for their enjoyment rather than for work. The Civil War soldiers are strong examples as to why baseball is the national pastime. The nervous anticipation that grips a solider as they prepare for battle. Their job consists of tasks that if performed incorrectly could result in fatalities. It is hard to imagine that an individual could block out the death and suffering that goes along with the job of being a civil war solider. This is why the stories of solider using baseball as a recreational pastime are amazing to me. A private in Virginia wrote home to his family saying: â€Å"It is astonishing how indifferent a person can become to danger. The report of musketry is heard but a very little distance from us . . . yet over there on the other side of the road most of our company, playing bat ball and perhaps in less than half an hour, they may be called to play a Ball game of a more serious nature (Civil War Baseball).† Sports and other similar leisurely activities have great power in helping people cope with great personal stress. It is common for a person go to a play or the ballpark to get work off their mind. However, it is taken to a different degree when discussing the emotional state of a person who may be moments from embarking in a battle that may prove fatal.
